How does it work?
Individuals can select the most appropriate training program depending on their background and experience. There are two training program options:
- new entrants to the telecommunications industry can complete a full qualification under our up-skill program; or
- workers already engaged in the telecommunications industry wishing to further their skills can undertake a cross-skill program.
nbn may subsidise training costs for individuals who are employed with a Delivery Partner or subcontractor, who complete an nbn approved training program, and who undertake training with one of our approved training providers. Individuals may alternatively choose to complete technical skills training prior to employment (but will not be eligible for an nbn subsidy in this instance).
What training programs are available?
Up-skill Program
Our up-skill program is intended for career starters, or individuals with no prior telecommunications experience in their interest area. Individuals completing the up-skill program will undertake a full telecommunications qualification. This involves completion of both core and elective units identified to meet nbn's skill needs and align with specific occupation and technology outcomes.
The program will typically be in the form of an apprenticeship or traineeship whereby individuals attend training in conjunction with gaining practical experience in the field.
- Certificate II in Telecommunications (ICT20213) ^
- Certificate II in Telecommunications Network, Build & Operate (ICT20215)
- Certificate III in Telecommunications (ICT30213) ^
- Certificate III in Telecommunications Network, Build & Operate (ICT30415)
^The Certificates II and III in Telecommunications have been revised and the Certificates II and III in Telecommunications Network, Build & Operate were released in January 2016. Learners currently in the ’13 qualifications can continue until the ASQA transition period has expired; however new learners must undertake the Certificates II and III in Telecommunications Network Build and Operate where these qualifications are on the scope of registration of the nbn approved Training Provider.
Cross-skill Program
The cross-skill program is an adaptable program that is designed to complement or build on the existing skills of experienced workers.
Eligible individuals will complete a series of units to become skilled in an adjacent occupation (approximately 2-6 units of competency anticipated).
Cross-skill programs are designed to support specific occupation and technology competencies in:
- Telecommunications Linesworker: Copper
- Telecommunications Linesworker: Fibre
- Telecommunications Linesworker: HFC
- Cable Jointer: Copper
- Telecommunications Technician: Fibre
- Telecommunications Technician: HFC
- Telecommunications Fibre Splicer
Mandatory nbn online training
Any person engaged in the construction, activation, operation or maintenance of the nbn™ network is required to complete mandatory nbn online training. These modules are available to workers who are employed by one of our Delivery Partners or subcontractors, are available at no cost and are accessible online via nbn’s accreditation portal, enAble™.
The courses cover:
- nbn: Your role in connecting Australia - An overview of nbn as an organisation and how to represent the nbn™ brand.
- nbn: HSE Awareness - An overview of health, safety and environment (HSE) requirements specific to working on the nbn™ network.
