Understanding your connection box

The start of your internet experience

It’s tempting to jump straight to talking about your Wi-Fi router when discussing your home internet, but let’s not forget what brings the online world to your doorstep. Before all the magic happens, let’s take it back to where the nbn network first connects to your home or business – your nbn connection box.

Your nbn connection box

HD movie marathons, endless TV binges, epic gaming sessions, and video calls with loved ones – it all begins with your nbn connection box. Acting as a modem, it sends and receives signals across the nbn network, and connects to your Wi-Fi router via an Ethernet cable.

Your router then takes the data received from the connection box and transmits it as a signal around your home or business (via Wi-Fi, a wired connection, or both), so that your devices can connect to the internet.

What's Your Connection Type?

The type of nbn connection box installed at your home or business depends on the type of nbn connection you have.

  • Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection boxes are installed on an internal wall
  • Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) connection boxes are connected to a wall outlet via a cable
  • Fixed Wireless and nbn Satellite access technologies also have their own version of a connection box
  • Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Building (FTTB) have a cable that connects from a wall socket directly into your Wi-Fi modem/router

Not sure what your nbn connection type is?

Moving home or business?

The nbn connection box is the property of nbn and will only work at the address where it was originally installed. Just like an electricity meter or utility box, the nbn connection box at your address is meant to stay where it is, even if you’re moving.

Preparing for an nbn full fibre connection?

Getting an nbn full fibre connection over FTTP? It’s important to understand where it can be installed and if you’ll be able to connect and place your Wi-Fi router in a location that suits the layout of your home or business..

Great internet needs the right router

Your Wi-Fi router is the heart of your online world – working in conjunction with your nbn connection box, it connects all of your devices in your home to the internet.

Wired vs wireless – which is right for you?

To create a great online experience, you can utilise a wired connection, Wi-Fi, or a combination of both. Wi-Fi offers the freedom to move around, while fixed cabling can support data hungry devices.
