Gigabit speeds rollout marks major milestone

More than 50 per cent of homes and business in nbn’s fixed-line footprint can now upgrade their connection to the nbn® Home Ultrafast speed tier, which offers peak download speeds from 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps.

A total of 5.86 million premises across the country can now access nbn Home Ultrafast, offering wholesale download speeds up to 1 Gbps, with 1.7 million premises already taking advantage of connections of 100 Mbps and above.

There is increasing demand for faster internet from homes and business across Australia and we are continuing to invest in the nbn network to stay ahead of demand.

nbn’s goal is to enable more than 9.7 million premises on the Fixed Line network to access plans based on the nbn Home Ultrafast wholesale speed tier. As part of this, the company rolled out 17,902 kilometres of fibre in FY22 for network investment upgrades as the company delivered on its purpose to lift the digital capability of Australia.

“This is fantastic news for the millions of people across Australia, especially families and busy households, who rely on the nbn network every day to work, learn and access essential services,” says Stephen Rue, CEO at nbn.

“Our network is constantly evolving so Australia is at the forefront of the digital economy and this is another important marker as we help keep people connected and our nation productive.”

As well as pushing more fibre deeper into communities, nbn is also improving capability and services in rural and regional Australia. Announced earlier in the year, an additional $750 million investment will help to deliver faster speeds to homes and businesses across semi-rural, regional and remote Australia as well as enhanced data allowances on nbn’s Satellite services – nbn Sky Muster and nbn Sky Muster Plus.

The nbn network currently touches more than 17 million people every day, with more than 8.5 million homes and businesses currently connected and 12 million premises Ready to Connect.
